I already asked a question abot Saint Dolores but now I found out that she isn't even a saint yet! So I need to pick a new saint by tomorow. Irene is my great grandma's name so I was thinking about her. But does anybody know or can anybody fing what she is the patron of?
Thanks everybody so much!
Shell's right; there's more than one St. Irene. But since my home church is St. Irene's, I'll tell you about the one I'm familiar with.
She was a young woman - about 15 or 16 years old - who lived in Macedonia around 300AD, back when it was illegal to be a Christian. She and her two sisters had taken some scrolls of scripture and snuck off to a hill outside the city where they thought they could study without being seen. Unfortunately, they were seen, and they were all arrested on the charge of being Christians. Her sisters were both executed, and the soldiers demanded that she renounce her faith. Irene refused, and so they threw her into a house of prostitution. God must have been with her, though, because no one would touch her. Finally, they gave up and decided to execute Irene. On the way to the place of execution where she was to be burned, she was instead shot by a soldier's arrow and killed. She is an example of faith, determination, love of knowledge, and purity. Pictures and statues will often show her having a scroll (because she was caught in possession of scripture), an arrow (because that is how she died), and a palm branch (because that is a symbol of martyrdom). She is the patron saint of girls and of peace.
