Catholics, do you ever ask favors of the souls in purgatory (read on)?
St. Alphonsus Liguori says that, although the Holy Souls cannot merit for themselves, they can obtain for us great graces. They are not, formally speaking, intercessors, as the Saints are, but through the sweet Providence of God, they can obtain for us as astounding favors and deliver us from evils, sickness and dangers of every kind.
They are most grateful to those who pray for them.

Greetings Brother Dave,
Oh yes, the souls, future saints, of purgatory. Remember these souls are in Heaven with God, yet in a state of purgation. They are on the ourter fringe so to speak, waiting for the day the stain of thier sin is removed. This really may be interpreted as a change of Spirit for them, actually giving in to God, forgiving themselves, perhaps. There may be many reason, specific to each soul, that keeps them in their state.
We, as the Universal Church, realize they need our prayer. As their brothers and sisters in faith and creation, can pray for them, as we pray for souls of our earthly family.
Just as we pray, they pray. We can ask them to pray for us, pray for each other, pray for future generations. They are able to pray for the same things we are, but not themselves. They are dependent upon our prayer, and prayers of others in purgatory. This must be one truely humble existance, they can't pray for themselves.
This may sound unusuall, but remember, sin is selfish. It includes the one commiting the sin and generally takes some else along with it.
The sinner in selfishness sined, and in absolute dependance begs us to pray for them. Forgiving them like a priest forgives in Gods name in the sacrement of reconcilliation. We are able to take an active part in their journey from purgation to sainthood.
Once in a purified state, the saint is able to pray for others, bless them and so forth. Ours is a faith involving all of creation, both past, present, and future, with the Holy Trinity at the center of it all.
What a wonderfull, loving God we have.
