why do crucifixes have "INRI" writen on a scroll above them?
i asked the woman in the christian gifts shop and she didn't know, and it's been bugging me all afternoon.
To expand upon the earlier answers:
It was traditional for crucified criminals to have their crime written on a board and nailed to the cross . Interestingly, whilst the four Gospel writers vary on exactly what was written, they all agree that *something* was and that it involved "the King of the Jews".
According to John's Gospel Pilate
"wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin."
Apparently, the Jewish authorities objected to the description, but Pilate stood by it.
It is interesting that the Latin "Iesus Nazarenus" is invariably translated as "Jesus of Nazareth" in the translations, when it actually translates as "Jesus the Nazarene" - which doesn't necessarily mean someone from Nazareth (a town which, a close reading of the original texts not to mention archaeological evidence suggests may never have existed in Jesus' time).
However, INRI stands for "Iesus Nazareus, Rex Ieudaeorum", or "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews". That the board was actually over his head seems unlikely, as watchers would then not have been able to see what it said. Far more likely would have been under his feet, at head height to adult observers.
