Is this symbol offensive?
For my birthday, my mom gave me a necklace with an iron cross, and because she knows I'm a complete nerd, she had it engraved with the words "Gott Mit Uns"(God With Us), a reference to a manga called Hellsing.
My Philosophy teacher saw it and started telling me how the iron cross was used as a nazi symbol, and got worse when she saw the words in german. But the thing is the necklace is completely innocent.
To my knowledge, many armies use the iron cross. My mom only gave it to me because she knows I like cross symbols. And the german words, if anything, just show I'm a nerd, given their context. I thought it was one of the best gifts anyone has ever given me, but even after I explained the context to my teacher, she still acted like she didn't believe me.
No one else who's seen the necklace found it offensive, and I'm not going to stop wearing it, but I'd like to know if anyone else would think the same way.
