Presents for LDS missionary?
A good friend of mine is doing mission work for the LDS church. I want to give him a small gift with religious significance, but I know that cross/crucifix necklaces are not the way to go with Mormons. Does anyone have any suggestions for something small that I could possibly make and send to him? I googled it and most of what I found was derogatory, and now, while I'm not personally a Mormon, I don't believe that we should tear down what others believe, that's an ignorant redneck thing to do. So please, positive and helpful suggestions only.

How is the removal of religious icons from public facilities religious persecution?
Why do _certain_ (read: not all) religious folks claim that limiting the placement of religious icons or displays on public property, which is governed by the secular government and which is paid for by all local residents regardless of religion, a case of "religious persecution"? I keep hearing this argument made, and yet I have not heard any explanation for the logic of this sentiment.
One repeated example I hear is that crucifixes cannot be displayed in public school classrooms, yet I can remember being in a public school in one of the most progressive cities in the US, and there were children wearing WWJD bracelets and necklaces with the cross on them and they faced no reprimands from disciplinarians.... where, then, is the persecution?
there is a difference between prohibiting the display of those things, and the school or government run institution placing those things.
in all honesty, unless such religious bracelets and necklaces are against some form of dress code (no bracelets, necklaces or jewelry of ANY kind- whether it was the fsm, jesus cross or a heart with a girl's name in it), then they shouldn't be prohibited.
i'm of the opinion that if there is such a code, then there should also be NO RELIGIOUS EXCEPTIONS, burhahs, jewish beanies, christian crosses, are NO EXCEPTION because they are religious if they violate a dress code not otherwise aimed at that.
so no jewelry = no crosses, no hats = no burkas.
however other than this, an individual should not be prohibited from wearing such items or clothing that are not otherwise against any such rule.
if t-shirts are allowed, then so should a what would jesus do t-shirt.
if caps are allowed, so should burkahs.
and so on.
but the distinction lies in WHO IS SPORTING THE ITEM or clothing.
i can see TEACHERS bieng prohibited or possibly government employees, but not a student or visitor.
the clear difference bieng that with the student or visitor bringing in the item, it is not the government institution or government funded institution that is responsible for supporting or advancing any particular religion.
