What's The Perfect Mix Of Instruments For A Rock Band With A Celtic/Folk/Jazz influence?
Please don't tell me - "Guitar, bass, drums, keyboards"
But if you decide to "not" think and tell me this.... What kind of guitars, keyboards, drums, bass?
Mandolins have a solid background in all three genres that you mentioned. Banjos were used in music that formed the roots from which folk and jazz split off, though they're not directly used in either (usually). The fiddle/violin is an instrument with a solid background in celtic and folk music.
Even though it's kind of obvious, the guitar is an instrument that is an essential in many genres of music. I'd go with an acoustic guitar for the celtic/folk, or maybe a jazz box-style guitar for the jazz (if it's got a hollow body it can be played both electrically and acoustically).
The piano is used often in jazz and somewhat often in folk, so that might be another way to go. If you want it to be a little bit funkier, you can go with an organ (or a synthesizer with a good-sounding organ pad).
The upright bass is used in all three styles of music to provide a some low tones to round out a band's sound. Again, if you want to go a little bit funkier (or for more convenience) you could go with an electric bass.
Drums...ah, I guess they're not really necessary, especially in folk/celtic music, but they are used often in jazz.
