cross rosary Why would a Rosary have four sections of ten, instead of 5 sections of 10?
My grandmother recently passed away and among her belongings we found a Rosary very different from her other ones. This one had 4 sections of 10 beads and the cross was made out of a lightweight material possibly tin. My mother was raised Catholic and she did not know the reason for the shorted Rosary.
Maybe Sister Veronica (i.e., "Quality Inspector #7) dozed off for a moment.
But seriously, what you have there is technically not a rosary but a 40-bead chaplet.
A "chaplet" is
(a) a string of beads, or
(b) a set of prayers said on such beads.
Thus, a rosary is a chaplet with 5 decades of Hail Mary beads.
My searches reveal that there are 40-bead chaplets to St. Jude and for the Dead. There are likely many other such devotions.

One way to "do your own pattern" is to get some graph paper, some transparency paper, and find a skull and X-bones on the Internet, and save it as a file. You can copy it to the transparent paper, and then using the graph paper, make a pattern off of it. They don't have to be too detailed for small, so you should be able to free-hand one on graph paper to make your pattern.
